Study: Cleveron’s PackRobot boosts Walmart’s in-store visits and sales

A recent study by Packaged Facts revealed that some 50% of Walmart click-and-collectors shopped at the store for additional items and bought more items, versus 31% of Target click-and-collectors, and 34% of click-and-collectors generally. Walmart uses Cleveron’s PackRobot as their click and collect solution called the Pickup Tower. The parcel pickup process is a self-service and takes only a couple of seconds per customer.

Creating a seamless omnichannel experience between the brick-and-mortar and online stores is increasingly important for retailers to keep up with competitors and the client’s expectations. Customers expect speed and convenience from the “buy online pick up in store” option and Walmart has delivered it. The study showed that more than a third (35%) of Walmart’s online purchasers have clicked-and-collected in the last three months.

Walmart’s investment in bringing e-commerce to physical stores is paying off. The world’s biggest retailer’s Q2 results showed the best quarterly comparable sales in more than ten years. While online sales grew 40%, visits to Walmart’s brick-and-mortar locations rose 2.2%. Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon said that the company’s omnichannel initiatives, like the Pickup Tower, are contributing to comp sales growth and providing customers with new levels of shopping convenience.

The integrated physical store and online model is also behind the sales growth of the world’s biggest fashion retailer Inditex, the owner of Zara, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti and other brands. Inditex chairman and CEO Pablo Isla highlighted that the company’s integrated stores and online model has enabled “sustained growth over the years, coupled with the consistent creation of economic, social and environmental value”. The model has yielded cumulative topline and same-store sales growth of 59% and 36% respectively during the last five years.

The company is fitting their biggest brand Zara’s stores with next-generation, customer-oriented technology to make the omnichannel experience as enjoyable as possible. In their flagship Stratford store in London, known for the array of innovative solutions, the click and collect is handled by two Cleveron’s CleverFlexes. The robotic parcel terminals act as automated self-service pickup points for online orders as well as automated and systematic storage space for parcels for the retailer. CleverFlex can hold more than 1,200 parcels and releases the parcel to the customer in seconds.
